Vega Tire Sprint Series at Atlanta Motorsports Park Race #6 report:
Summer was in full force for the sixth round of the Vega Tire Sprint Series Saturday, August 10th at Atlanta Motorsports Park kart track in Dawsonville, GA. Several new drivers were on hand to try their hand at the challenging track and get some valuable practice in for the October 4-6 $12,000 Vega Sprint Nationals.
After two rounds of practice and qualifying, nineteen (19) TaG Seniors took the track for their 10 lap pre-final race. The first four karts, which were separated by .3 of a second in qualifying put on a fierce battle with newcomer, Nick Lefferdo surprising the AMP veterans charging from his 3rd place starting position to win the pre-final over fast qualifier Jose Garcia and season point leader Joseph Buffa. The pre-finals lined the competitors up for the 15 lap final races.
The first event was Kid Karts with Brayden Huguenard, Jack O’Brien and Vincent Cortililo dicing it out. These young men continue to get faster each week. Their progress has been fun to watch this season.
Next up was the final race for the Tag Juniors. Willis Woerheide got the jump on the field and led into turn one. Pole sitter Michael Bilyy ran down Woerheide and proceeded to lay down several fast laps in route to his 3rd victory in a row. Lap after lap Bilyy broke his own track record finally breaking into the 51s on lap 13 with a sizzling lap of 51.937 seconds on the .85 mile track. Woerheide hung in there for his best finish of the season in 2nd with Damon Steele rounding out the podium and doing what he needs to maintain his season point’s lead.
Pre-final winner Lefferdo led the 19 TaG Seniors to the green flag. Jose Garcia got the jump from his outside front row start and led the field on lap one. With Lefferdo experiencing engine woes and falling thru the field, season point’s leader Joseph Buffa slotted into 2nd and Alex Sala charged from his 5th place starting position to 3rd place. Behind these three, several fierce battles were being waged among George Paez, Lee Johnson, Justin Garrison, Danny Kaye and newcomer Matt Tilden, in his 1st race since 2009. Welcome back Matt! After 15 hard fought laps it was Garcia with his 1st win of the season followed by Buffa and Sala. Hard charger of the race was Rick Whitlock who charged from his 18th place starting position to 9th place. Buffa maintains his points lead, but Garcia’s win puts him in the mix with Sala, Johnson, Garrison and Kay.
CADET / YAMAHA SPORTSMAN
Enzo Espinosa was the man sweeping qualifying, the pre-final and checking out to his first win by ten seconds in the final in our Cadet/Yamaha Sportsman class. Enzo has made incredible progress since his racing debut in June this year in race #3. Season point’s leader Wills Woerheide kept Espinosa honest in 2nd with Nick Pearson filling out the podium in his racing debut! Austin Hugenard’s 4th place finish kept him securely in 2nd in the season points, but Espinosa’s victory vaulted him into 3rd place with two races to go.
Season point’s leader David Weber was the fast qualifier and won the pre-final, but engine woes in the final left the door open for Jeff Price, James Hurley and Michael Keats. These three staged a fierce battle with Price coming out on top in the end for his first victory of the season. Hurley’s 3rd place finish pushed him back by Weber for the points lead by a scant 10 points
